An iOS App to LiDAR-Scan Your Room for amroc-pro Room Mode Calculations

The Why

We are working on multiple ways for you to get a model of your physical spaces so you can perform room mode simulations as easily and quickly as possible.

One obvious way to digitize a physical room is through LiDAR scanning. Fortunately, Apple Pro Devices include a LiDAR scanner. amscan, the first iOS app by amcoustics, uses this LiDAR scanner on your iPhone or iPad to make scanning your room as easy as possible.

Have a Look Inside

Fast Scanner

Faster than you think. Just start swiping wall to wall and try to paint all the walls with the yellow grid.

  • Preview and Resume: You can pause to see the results, then resume the same scan.
  • Interior Furniture: amscan hides it for you, so you stay focused while scanning and can concentrate on the walls and hard surfaces only.
  • Scan Coaching: From time to time, if you need help, a coaching view shows up with messages that help you scan more accurately.

Room Modes Calculation

As soon as the scan finishes, you only have to wait around 20 seconds before you can see the room modes of your space. Here's what amscan does underneath:

  • Simulation Geometry: amscan takes all the scan data and creates a closed, watertight shape that accurately represents the room you just scanned. This shape must be closed, watertight, manifold, and simple (low-polygon) so the next step can run smoothly.
  • FEM Calculation: Once it has the simulation geometry, amscan taps into the power of amroc pro. This engine calculates the room modes quickly. amscan shows the first five room modes for free, so you can see how accurate the system is.
  • In-App Purchase: To see the remaining room modes up to the Schroeder frequency, we offer in-app purchases that unlock additional modes.
  • Problematic Scans: If the first stage fails, amscan shows you hints explaining why. This includes a 3D view of your interior with a red glowing marker that highlights the edges (doors, openings, walls) that caused the failure, so on your next scan, you can pay closer attention to those areas.

Simulation Geometry

To run any kind of simulation (acoustics or otherwise), the first thing you need in any software is a closed mesh that is manifold and, preferably, low-polygon. amscan can provide this through an in-app purchase. You can see the shape of the mesh and the available formats before you buy. We currently support these formats:

  • DWG: Version: R2000, Z Up, Unit is Meter, Compatible with: AutoCAD, PyroSIM, COMSOL Multiphysics, and more
  • DXF: Version: R2010, Z Up, Unit is Meter, Compatible with: AutoCAD, COMSOL Multiphysics, CATT-Acoustic, ODEON Room Acoustics, PyroSIM, and more
  • STL: Version: Binary, Z Up, Unit is Millimeter, Compatible with: Blender, Fusion 360, SolidWorks, Rhino, ANSYS Fluent, SimScale, I-Simpa, COMSOL Multiphysics, OpenFOAM (via surfaceMeshConvert)
  • STEP: Version: AP214, Z Up, Unit is Millimeter, Compatible with: Fusion 360, SolidWorks, CATIA, Siemens NX, Rhino, FreeCAD, ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL Multiphysics, SimScale, RecurDyn
  • OBJ: Both Z up and Y Up, Unit is Meter, Compatible with: CHORAS, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, SketchUp, Rhino, Unity, Unreal Engine, Raven Pro (acoustics), PyroSIM

If you think a format is missing that you need for your simulation pipeline, send an email to improve@amcoustics.com and we will do our best to add it to the list.
